Optare has been shortlisted for Transport Supplier of the Year by the National Transport Awards judging committee for its latest innovation, the extended range Solo electric bus.
Earlier this year Optare electric buses were independently verified by TfL as the most efficient in London. However, the challenge set by operators has always been for electric buses to achieve a whole day’s operating range with little or no need for opportunity charging throughout the day.
Optare have taken up the challenge and recent development work has increased the range of a Solo electric bus by 50% with minimal impact on passenger capacity and distribution. Previously vehicles would achieve up to 95 miles on a single charge depending on operating conditions and driving style, the new vehicles now achieve up to 130 miles.
Graham Belgum, Optare President, said, “The capital and whole life costs of our vehicles in real world operation are at the heart of the Optare ethos and therefore the focus of this project was on minimising the number of additional batteries and keeping extra weight to a minimum in order to maximise the efficiencies of the electric bus. I am delighted that our continued innovations in electric bus technology have been recognized and shortlisted for this prestigious industry award.”
