Optare’s
quest to secure sales on the Continent has received
a significant boost with the decision by Vineta
Verkehrsgesellschaft GmbH of Kiel, Germany to
order a second Solo.
The operator in this northern German city took delivery of a former Optare demonstrator Solo last April. Trials with the vehicle have been so successful that a new Solo has been ordered and is now in service. The vehicle is a left-hand-drive 9.5m model with two passenger doors. It is fitted with a Mercedes-Benz engine developing 148 bhp and an Allison 2000 automatic transmission. There are 27 Esteban Civic seats and interior comfort is enhanced by choice of a 9kW Wesbasto auxiliary heater complete with a pre-heat timer and two under seat blowers.
Recognition of the cold winters frequently encountered in this part of Germany is also evidenced by the installation of full thermal insulation to the body sides, roof and underfloor.
Jurgen Ubben, who runs the Vineta fleet, commented: “We have been delighted with our first Solo and the in-service support we have received from Optare and look forward to our new Solo winning more passengers in the future”.
Bob Coombes, Optare’s Group Managing Director, said: “Our progress in winning Continental European sales is now becoming evident and this foothold in Germany is of particular significance given the strength of the indigenous suppliers. However, the attractive, low floored, low-weight and compact design of Solo are all attributes where Optare scores particularly highly – as Vineta has confirmed”.
